Specimens are filled with water or nitrogen, and set at pressures & temperature prescribed by the standard. The test requires 6 specimens to be tested for compliance. The pressures are recorded and pressure transducers are optional to pinpoint pinhole leaks. Inspection for ballooning, cracking or swelling are taken periodically during a 24 hour period.
1.1 This Sustained Pressure test method covers the determination of the time-to-failure of both thermoplastic and reinforced thermosetting/resin pipe under constant internal pressure.
1.2 This Sustained Pressure test method provides a method of characterizing plastics in the form of pipe under the conditions prescribed.
1.3 The Sustained Pressure test values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard.
Sustained Pressure Testing of Plastic Piping systems may be expected to give years of service life. This test is applied using internal water pressure at a desired Psi. The test verifies the integrity of the pipe and its quality for long-term life expectancy. The Sustained Pressure test usually is applied for a 1000 hour duration and pipe that is processed properly will not crack or swell.
Specimens for the Sustained Pressure test: 6 pipe lengths. Length of each specimen depends on size.
