Cyclic pressure testing determines a pipe or fitting's susceptibility to fatigue failure. The test sample is made into a vessel using appropriate end caps. Typically, the assembly is filled with water and then cycled using a solenoid valve that applies either hydraulic or air pressure on the filled specimens. Cyclic pressure testing is different than intermittent shock testing in that the rate of application of the pressure is more gradual, and the time at the specified pressure is usually reported. Cyclic pressure testing typically has a cycle times that specify the number of seconds on and the number of seconds off. Many specifications require this type of testing including:
ASME A112.18.1 Plumbing Fixture Fittings,
ASME A112.18.6Flexible Water Connectors, and
CSA B125Plumbing Fittings
